Bacup Borough 1 - 1 Winsford United - Sat 5th April 2008

TEN MAN BACUP GIVE TOP BATTLING DISPLAY.

Bacup Borough had to play almost all the second half with ten men when Steve Stott was showed a Red Card for what the Referee described as serious foul play. Bacup had taken a twelve minute lead through Domminic Slavin who had battled well to disposess the Winsford Defender before shooting and finishing well, Bacup were in control of the game and were unlucky not to have been two goals infront when they won a free kick, Lee Stott delivered a quality ball in and equally Jason Finch attacked the ball with a rocket header but suprisingly the Assistant Referee flaged for offside and the goal was chalked out.
Winsford tried all ways to get in behind a resolute Bacup defence without any joy, it was the home side that were worthy of their slender half time lead.

For the paying spectators the second half had everything to had some spice to the game, on fifty two minutes Sterve Stott was shown a red card when he went for a 50/50 ball, although he did win the ball, it was at the top of the ball and Bacup were reduced to ten men, Bacup dropped Slavin back into midfield and despite the fact that they were a man down it was the home side who were poseing the threat when they were awarded another free kick which Matthew Cross struck against the foot of the post with the keeper well beaten.

For most of the game Bacup's experienced keeper Melville had not been called upon, on sixty nine minutes what was a relivant easy take for the keeper, his blazay approach to a long range Duckworth shot proved costly for the home side when he failed to get his body behind the shot, this turned out to be a disaster as his outstretched hand pushed it onto the post but it had enough on the ball to drop over the line, Winsford had been given an unexpected life line and for the next twenty one minutes Bacup were in a game, this goal ensured the mid week Mid Cheshire Cup Winners were determined to try to get the winner, what a final end to the game this did turn out to be, Bacup won a corner from which a Stuart Shephered effort was cleared off the line but only as far as to Slavin who shot direct at the keeper, following this and a Winsford attack Bacup broke again and Dominic Slavin had a chipped shot headed off the line, then it was Winsfords turn at the opposite end when they won a corner, from this they rattled the underside of the cross bar and the ball was eventually re claimed by Melville and then in the closing seconds Winsford played a neat one two inside the box for the resulting shot to smash against the Bacup Borough upright.

Manager Brent Peters Comments " When it is said goals change games, there is never a truer word spoken, with eleven players on the pitch we were in total control, following the sending off which I thought was a bit rash when a yellow should have been the colour, Steve Stott did make a genuine effort to win the ball which he did win but I must admit by connecting at the top of the ball, some officials would have given a yellow and some a red, on this occasion it was a red, but even when we were reduced to ten men, my lads were working that hard we were still in control, it is just a pity my keeper was not as in control, by his own admission he did treat the shot with contempt and that certainly did cost us three points, however massive credit must go to every player from my side especially the lads at the back who when we were reduced to ten men and following Winsfords equiliser, every each one dug in and worked tirelessly for the cause, we still had chances to have won the game but in the end so did Winsford, so all in all under the circumstances I must be grateful for the one point.
