Bacup Manager Rang the changes upfront opting for youth rather than experience, the Manager called for his players to get amongst the opposition in order to make things happen, something that as been lacking upfront in previous matches, what ever the Manager said to them before this game it certainly worked, Bacup looked like a complete different side, a side which started bright, fully committed and dictated the pace for the entire first half that Squires Gate just had no answer for the power pace and movement of the home side.
Bacup opened the scoring on twelve minutes when following a throw in to Davey Luker he turned and sent in a stunning shot which came back off the keeper for Danny Hartley to react in firing the home side into the lead, this was a start that Bacup are not used to, and from this opener the home side started to move the ball with lots of confidence leaving Squiers Gate with no answer to their movement, further chances came, first of all Davey Luker had a long range shot just wide following good work from Slavin, then Dominic Slavin made a good run and his shot was inches wide of the post, Bacup then had strong pleas for a penalty which was not given when Luker was brought down in the
box. It was almost half time when Squires Gate had any real effort,
this came as a result of Shephered conceeding a free kick which was just wide of the post, the last chance of the half came to Bacup when they were awarded a free kick which was put out for a corner which was defended.
The second half got under way and Bacup had an early scare when defender Matthew Cross mist his kick which caused confusion in the home sides defence but Squires Gate failed to capitulise on his mistake, then Bacup at the opposite end did win a corner which following a double header was eventualy cleared off the line, although Bacup were on top Squires Gate did come back into the game more as the home side were not as dominant, on sixty five minutes Squires Gate won a free kick, the ball was knocked long diagonal into the box, Dean Repullo had given his marker Bamba half a yard which was enough to wrap his foot around the ball to equilise in the far corner of the net, nine minutes later Bacup had won a free kick at the edge of the box when Jon Stephenson was fowled, Stephenson was replaced by Carroll, Matthew Cross struck the free kick which came back off the wall for him to shape the rebound back into the net and putting Borough ahead again.
Squires Gate bypassed midfield and got the ball forward early in search of the equiliser but the home side were determined not to let the lead slip again and were all working tirelessly, the game as a contest was over on eighty nine minutes when Squires Gate had attacked in numbers, Bacups Davey Luker did well to win the ball which he released early for Tony Carroll who dispite the interference of a divout Carroll still managed to guide the ball away from the Squires Gate Keeper to secure three vital points in a game that Bacup fully deserved to win.
Brent Peters Managers Comments " Following recent performances of a lacklustre forward line that lacked that drive, it was inevitable changes had to be made, the pleasing part was that the young lads up there did everything that was asked of them, so much so that their drive and determination and work ethics was the lead for the rest of the team, the last time I saw an entire Bacup team fully committed like these lads were tonight was when we defeated Barrow in the Lancashire Cup, what this victory proves is what I have constantlly been saying, work hard, press the ball and make things happen, then things will happen & happen they did, three goals and three vital points fully deserved by fourteen committed players"
