Manager Brent Peters Pre-Season prediction was the first month would be a testing time due to un availabilities, well as the first month draws to a close, for Borough this was the main chance to chalk up their first win of the season especially after being gifted a fourth minute opener.
Greg Hall the Maine Road keeper played the ball out of defence and then tried to play his full back the ball which was cut out by Barker who found Carroll who made no mistake with the keeper stranded hitting the ball into the empty net, this opener should have taken Borough to another level, however on fourteen minutes young defender Ryan Hall made a rash challenge on Liam Beckford which resulted in Maine Road being awarded a free kick, which was taken short, as the ball was placed across the six yard box Mazdak Alimadao left his marker Nick Dowsing to put the visitors on level terms.
Twenty Minutes into the game Bacup did get back in front when Danny Hartley made a penetrating run down the right before delivering a deep cross which Tony Carroll finished at the far post., unfortunately for Borough this lead was short lived when five minutes later Maine Road got themselves back into the game, Bacup giving the ball away cheaply. As Maine Road knocked the ball diagonally and the ball then came back across the goal to the far post where three advancing midfield players were on hand unopposed by any Borough midfield player to give Neil Chappel the simplest tap in.
Minutes later Bacup should have been 3-2 up when Dave Luker advanced into the Maine Road penalty box, everything opened up for him to shoot but his dwelling on the ball trying to walk the ball into the net proved to be a glorious opportunity missed. On thirty eight minutes yet again young defender Ryan Hall made another rash challenge giving away a direct free kick that Luke Mack struck into the top corner of the net giving the visitors the lead. In the second half Maine Road had keeper Greg Hall to thank in keeping their lead in tack, as for Borough, like the Manager said they will be glad to get the first month of the season out of the way.
Brent Peters Comments ‘There was absolutely no defence for the guilty in this game, Dean Brown apart who was out injured we were as strong as we can get with our current crop of players in midfield, all normally good strong disciplined midfield players, that are comfortable on the ball, yet for some inexplicable reason our main area of strength, composure, organisation and ball retention was just not there. Taking nothing away from Maine Road who were poor side but good enough to take advantage of our inefficiency to pass the ball and at times our lack of work rate. We had three good lads in the middle of the park but on this showing all three fell well below their own normal high standards, something that no team can cope with. In addition to this we had a young enthusiastic defender who must learn that despite his enthusiasm and eagerness, there are times when you just stand your ground and do not dive in, on two occasions an eagerness to win the ball did result in two goals coming from free kicks in dangerous area’s, no doubt about it, this is a massive bad result for us of which there can be no excuses.
