Bacup Borough 1 - 3 Glossop North End Sat 23rd February 2008

Just when it seemed that Bacup Boroughs Season of ill fated luck that as seen the absence of key players through non football related matters were behind them, with the new look squad looking to take shape well, the curse struck again when Influential Utility Player Stuart Shepherd had to be withdrawn following falling off a ladder at work, this was then followed by a late withdrawal of Midfield Player Inderjeet Aujla with an overnight stomach virus, then to make matters even worse for Manager Brent Peters, Goal Keeper Phil Melville dislocated his finger in the eighth minute of the game when producing a save, Melville carried on but his injury did have an impact on the outcome of this game.
Despite the set backs Bacup started well dominating the early stages of the game, it was the homes sides early pressure which resulted in them taking the lead with a 15th minute goal, this was created with excellent play involving Dean Repullo, Steve Stott, Davey Luker and Tony Carroll from which Danny Hartley reacted to attacking the loose ball in the penalty area to score from close range, following this early lead Bacup almost made it two -nil when Hartley did get caught with a nasty challenge whilst going for the ball, this resulted in a free kick being awarded to the home side which was taken with quality and accuracy, with the ball seemingly heading to just under the cross bar, Fielding the Glossop Keeper rose well to tip the ball over the bar, this save did prove to be an important save when on twenty four minutes at the opposite end of the pitch Bacups Sean Cryer did make a late challenge on Keiron Lugsden for the Referee to award Glossop a Penalty to which Dave Young stepped up to take and convert.

Bacup almost got their noses back infront when the ball was knocked down the right touch line for Jon Stephenson to get on the end of, his shot /cross deceived the Glossop Keeper who was grateful when the ball struck the top of the bar to go to a dead ball situation, on reflection of how the first half had gone being all square at the break would have been a fair result, however Glossop had other ideas when on forty four minutes full back Jamie Kay latched onto a loose ball at the edge of the Bacup Penalty area, he shot through a crowded area, with Melville right behind the shot, the injury to his fingre had far reaching consequences when the ball spun from him into the net, this was a cruel blow to Bacup who certainly did not deserve to be behind at the break.

At the break Bacup had another set back when they lost the services of influential, creative MidField Player Davey Luker with a Groin Strain, Davey was replaced by John Borg, it was little suprising that very little was created by both sides in the second half, Bacup breaking the majority of the Glossop attacks down but going forward were struggling to create anything, Bacups best chance to equilise did come following a corner which Sean Cryer headed onto the cross bar at the far post area.

It was from a Bacup corner that Glossop put the game beyond any reach of their hosts, on seventy four minutes a quality ball was delivered into the Glossop Penalty area but was attacked by the visitors defence clearing any danger but also setting up a counter attack from which Glossop got men forward very quickly with the Bacup Players struggling to get back into any such shape, the ball was delivered accross field finding the advancing James Alton who was unopposed to deliver the ball into the area for Lugsden to finish, this goal got to the Bacup Players who for the remaing minutes did loose the spirit and endeavour required to salvage anything from the game.

Brent Peters Managers Comments" During the first half we were inconsistent by the way of us starting well and in command of the game, to going sloppy with our passing which gave Glossop the opportunity to get a foot hold in the game, despite this I could not see them scoring, the Penalty was a Penalty and was rash, the lad had ran the ball to far and was heading out of play so to that end it was a gift, their second goal would have been saved had Phil not been injured but the maddening part for me was the player that got the strike off was a defender and whilst young Jon Stephenson had done well for us last week, he must learn his defensive duties when defenders make advanced runs and get into good areas, their third goal was on the counter attack from which we had players who were capable of getting back to help their team mates who were struggling to get back, it just seemed to me that their attitude was why should I sprint to get back when I am an attacker, not a defender, it was disgusting and like I told the culprits at full time, this is a team game to which we must all be prepared to help each other out, be that going forward or getting back, be that on the defensive that Strikers have to sprint past midfield players and defenders to fill in the holes, then so be it, some players never made that effort on their third goal following our corner which was disappointing.
On the whole our main problem is scoring goals but we will only do that if players are prepared to be switched on in mind, be aggressive and strong and have the desire to make things happen, the strikers as a unit failed to do just that, I am not sure if this was down to fear of getting hurt or basically they are not sharp enough in their mind of thought"
