Bacup Borough 0 - 2 Formby Sat 15th March 2008

This was a game that total possesion Bacup dominated through out, sadly lacking for the home side was any sort of cutting edge to turn their possesion into goals, this in contrast to Formby who were given two opportunities during the entire ninety minutes and those rare opportunities were enough to take the points from a game that in the main Formby were second best in the possession stakes.

Formby opened the scoring capitulising on a pass from Steve Stott attempted for Jon Stephenson that was given away when Stephenson seemed to show for feet but then ran into an advanced position, the losse ball was collected by Karl Gornell who advanced forward before slipping the ball to the Formby skipper, when Bacup's skipper Matty Cross did make a rash attempt to win the ball, John Garnell embarresed his opponent before picking his spot to score.

Despite more constant pressure from Bacup with quality deliveries going into the box from both Repullo and Lee Stott Bacups strike force were sadly failing to capitulise on the service to which they were being given, even Lee Gunnion in the Formby goal could afford a few handling mistakes with out being punished.

IN the twenty third minute Bacup made life even more difficult for themselves when Forward Jon Stephenson was bundled off the ball with ease, the full back advanced forward before playing the ball to the lively Stephen Cavanagh upfront, his pace took him past Anderson with ease, with the full back having continued his run, defender Matthew Cross was faced with a 2v1 situation against him from which Formby's Gornall was slipped the ball before finishing well, this kind of movement and cutting play should Bacup have had upfront, this linked with their possesion would have given Bacup the points, sadly this was missing, at the half time break Manager Brent Peters brought on Danny Hartley to Replace Stephenson, it was Hartley that could and should have given the home side a life line when he was not awarded a clear penalty when he was taken before the ball, this decision not given typified the poor performance of Referee Simon Mather.

Peters made another early substitution taking off defender Lee Anderson replacing him with Inderjeet Singh, this was also followed when Jon Borg was replaced and Dominic Slavin was given his debut upfront, the home side were still in lots of possesion of the ball and in contrast to the first half both Hartley and Slavin were creating openings but that missing link of a finisher was even more evident when Tony Carroll blasted a shot well over the bar from twenty yards out.

Brent Peters Comments " Prior to this game I talked about hungry strikers, lads that will get involved and mix it to make things happen with the opposition defenders, lads that will have worked that hard against the opposition defence, they will have known they have been in a game, Pressing, & closing down and getting in amongst defenders create what I call ugly goals, goals we will never get because we have lads that want the pretty chances, chances that are on a plate, chances that very rarely come because the opposition dont make that many mistakes in the defensive third and when they have done, like a couple of times the Formby keeper did in this game, we are to far off to capitulise, it really is so frustrating at the minute, I have Midfield Players that are total compeitors and will give as much as they do get hence why we have lots of the ball, yet it goes upfront and its like watching the suger plum faries, despite the possesion, we would not have scored had we have played until next Saturday, Reason why? because we have lads that just do not want to compete to make things happen, this as got to change if we are to stay in this Division, I left Danny Hartley out because in previous games he has turned it on and then turned it off like a tap something you just cant do, yet I bring him on in the second half and he did exactly what was asked of him and what a difference he did make but he must do that consistantly and not having to be left out before he responds, then in the first half I have Jon Stephenson, again another good young lad like Danny but he cant turn it on and off like a tap, he must be consistant, Saturday he got replaced at half time because he was in effective, in addition we had Tony Carroll and believe me he only stayed on the pitch because of his experience, he was no better than Stevo and I could easilly have replaced Tony at the break instead of Stevo, the bottom line I need to find that consistant Chemistry upfront that will turn posssesion into goals and quick"
