This day was dedicated to the memorial of Sophie Lancaster the girl tragically attacked and beaten to death in a Bacup Park. Everything about the day which raised £1,000 was fitting apart from another gift from Bacup Borough but this time to the opposition resulted in yet another defeat.
Bacup Borough Players have only themselves to blame having had territorially the majority of possession and working themselves into good goal scoring opportunities but failed to make these situations count. First of all a quality ball in from Prescott was not attacked, in another attack the ball drops nicely at the edge of the box with no Bacup Player getting near the ball to send goal bound and the final best chance was there when Herbert failed to connect with the ball properly on the turn. Had he have done it would have been an almost certain goal.
The home side were made to suffer for not making those chances count when a kick up field by Goal keeper Horridge went astray and ended with Abbey Hey in possession, the players penetrating run went unchallenged and when he cut inside the box his shot seemed to catch not only the Bacup defenders by surprise but also Paul Horridge, the goal was a blow to borough coming three minutes prior to half time.
In the second half home side seemed to huff and puff and failed to get any sort of rhythm going in their game. Matthew Cross was introduced replacing Mark Fitton and it was Cross who made the Abbey Hey Keeper work when his shot was tipped onto the bar and out for a corner, however it was at the opposite end of the field where Bacup again gifted the opposition with an opportunity. Keeper Horridge with the ball, his defenders spread across the pitch and the ball is thrown into a wide position but gets passed across the back line. John Luker under no pressure attempted a little inside pass into midfield which was cut out and knocked forward towards the Bacup goal, as the Bacup defenders scramble back to avert the danger a clumsy challenge by both players as they come together resulted in the official pointing to the penalty spot which was converted. With Bacup’s barren scoring spell there would be no way back and yet another present gifted to the opposition.
" Brent Peters Comments " In Football one must earn the right to play, by this I mean must all win our personal battles, once this is achieved you have the right to go and play. This is something we failed to do mainly due to players helping out other players instead of worrying about their own duties. At times our midfield players were going into areas where if we lost the ball they were not able to get anywhere near their men to win their battles, having said that we still did get the ball upfront into some good areas, sadly the opportunities all seemed to fall to the same player who for some inexplicable reason just cant seem to score however easy the opportunity.
This apart if we defend well then whilst we do not score, neither does the opposition but yet again players fail to take on their responsibilities, for Abbey Hey's first goal. I have to question why the lad was allowed to run the distance he ran without any sort of a challenge and when it was obvious we were about to have a problem, why did our last man get out sooner and put in a challenge. It was a poor goal coming at a poor time minutes prior to half time. Their second goal was a killer to us and until we can get our strikers back, Tony Carrol, Lee Oldham, Danny Hartley, Ian Barker all were missing, we are just struggling to find one goal never mind two or three. The goal was a gift yet again by us over playing on the back line, but to be fair I don’t entirely blame the lad who gave the ball away sloppy, I blame my Coaching staff, whilst there is nothing wrong in playing football if it is in the right areas and whilst one must differentiate which players are and are not comfortable on the ball. In the main centre backs are defenders, therefore defend and not be encouraged to play, we are in a result business not coaching kids how to be comfortable receiving and passing balls, that’s ok when there is nothing at stake but we have a lot at stake at this moment in time- fighting for first division survival at the rate we going, especially playing in wtong areas.
