Salford City 1 - 0 Bacup Borough Tue 1st April 2008

Football can be a cruel game which Bacup Borough found out when they went down to a single Mick Robinson goal but it really should have been a different story.
In the first half it was the visitors that were dominating the game and creating the openings, although a John Borg short back pass and a short kick from keeper Phil Melville were the only real danger from Salford City, it was Bacup that got a grip of the game and should have made their dominance count with goals, John Borg hit two long range efforts, whilst Danny Hartley had two great opportunities, his first he di chip the advancing keeper but his effort went high and wide, then Danny did go round the keeper in a wide position with the keeper stranded well outside his goal the angle was to tight to shape the ball into the net so he opted to pull the ball back for Borg which was intercepted and cleared, a further chance came when Domminic Slavin beat his man for pace, he cut inside but failed to get his shot off sooner which resulted in the Salford defence forcing him wide until any opportunity had gone.
At the half time break it was all square with Bacup much the better side but with nothing to show for their efforts, frustratingly that was to be the story of the game when on fifty two minutes Salford City won a corner, Bacup switched off for seconds but it was enough to get punnished when Salford took it short and quickly, the ball was then floated in Captain Steve Stott was on hand to clear before getting deflected away in the direction of Robinson, Chadwick went to close the danger to which Robinson did not get a clean strike on the ball but it was enough to get past Melville in the Bacup goal.
This goal was a blow to the visitors but credit to them as they were not going to take it lying down by forcing City onto the offensive, Bacup Manager Brent Peters used his three Substitutes in an effort to get the break their play deserved, this almost happened when Tony Carroll lofted the ball to Hartley whos Header was saved on the line by Campbell the Salford keeper, on eighty five minutes Bacup almost did get an equiliser when they were awarded a free kick on the left hand side of the area, Lee Stott put in a quality ball which Stuart Shepherd got on the end of which Campbell somehow managed to keep the ball out and secure the points for Salford.

Brent Peters Comments" I must say even in defeat I was really pleased with my players, their work rate and the way we used the ball was good to see, Salford City are a good side with some quality players and some tidy pacey players but due to the work rate from everyone Salford's game plan was just not working, they changed their formation from 442 to 433 and still we were in command of the game, sadly there were two scenireo's which have cost us the game, the first was for the amount of times we did get into very good area's where we should have been taking our chances, the other is getting done from a corner and all because for a split second we have switched off, this resulted in us not being set right and due to that they score, for eighty nine minutes in the main they have all done really well, that one minute of indiscipline and relaxing bodies have cost us the chance to get something from the game which would have been rewarding for what their efforts deserved "
