Despite a good positive start from the visitors it soon all went down stream at the Riverside in this local Derby but the rams can thank their visitors for gifting them the opportunity to score as neither side looked like they had a goal within them.
Ramsbottom's opening goal came mid-way through the half following some sustained pressure from Bacup. The visitors were claiming for a free kick and failed to play to the whistle when Ramsbottom's Brendon O'Shaughnessy collected a loose ball. With the Bacup midfield players more intent on the Referee than closing the ball, O'Shaughnessy shaped the ball over keeper Horridge's head to give the Rams an undeserved lead at this stage of the game. The remainder of the half was da-ja-vue as the visitors had lots of the ball but failed to create any openings constantly giving the ball away.
At the start of the second half Bacup Manager Brent Peters introduced Herbert replacing Fitton in the hope that Herbert’s pace in behind would cause Ramsbottom problems. However shortly after the half time break the usual effective Borg put the final nail in any hope Bacup had of getting back into this game when he attempted a back pass that fell way short of Horridge in the Bacup goal gifting O'Shaughnessy the easiest of chances to secure the points.
" Manager Brent Peters Comments " Prior to this game I told the lads that a win at the Riverside would mean that we would have won two and drawn one in our last three league games all of which had been away from home, that would be Championship form. However such is the thin dividing line instead of taking seven from nine points away from home, the loss means we have now only taken four points from a possible nine points which is very disappointing. What is more disappointing is that at Squires Gate we looked a very good solid outfit but in this game both sides looked poor and both looked like they lacked quality and ideas.
whilst I can't comment on Ramsbottom as it could have been a bad day at the office for them as I don’t see them every week, I can comment on Bacup. We have players that are comfortable on the ball and who have quality but it was sadly missing in this game. This I put down to lack of consistency which comes from how an individual prepares for each game in body and mind. You see how committed John Borg would normally be for a game but he was so ineffective in this game and not focused at all in this match which led to both Ramsbottom's goals. I must question where he was on Friday Evening. in contrast you look at Davey Luker who is consistent in every game I just wish I had a team of those sort of players. Iindividuals inconsistency results in the team being likewise hence our ineffective stuttering start to the season"
