This was always going to be a tough opening fixture against a side that have aspirations of winning the competative League.
On a hot sunny day in a terrific stadium setting that did make conditions at times very difficult for both teams with the intense heat and very little breeze, this was a highly competative entertaing game, it was Bacup that had the first chance when a Lee Oldham cross was met by the head of Danny Hartley who failed to get any power behind his header.
However on fifteen minutes the Bacup keeper Jack Mcgregor did keep his side level with an excellent save following a Bacup switch off, nine minutes later Bacup were in front following some exquisit football, New signing Wayne Jopson headed the ball to Stuart Shephered who flicked the ball to Danny Hartley, after creating himself some space he curled his shot into the inside of their keepers right hand post for an excellent finish.
On thirty one minutes Bacups Captain Ian Hughes made a clumsy challenge which resulted in a Newcastle free kick some twenty five yards out, the kick was curled round the wall and just inside the Bacups keepers right hand post, possing the question should a player have been on the post.
Bacup could have increased their lead when Lee Oldham powered his way between three defenders but opted to go alone when his striking partner Tony Carroll had pulled off into space, a pass to Carroll would most certainly have given Borough an half time lead.
At the start of the second half Newcastle won a corner which was well worked and almost certainly did bring them a goal but Adam Lucas was situated on the post to clear.
On fifty three minutes Bacup took the lead following another piece of good flowing football between Lee Oldham, Adam Lucas and Danny Hartley who found Tony Carroll who produced an unstopable shot giving Borough the lead, this lead lasted until seventy minutes when Newcastle produced some good neat inter passing which resulted in their equiliser.
Several corners did come Newcastles way which did cause Borough some problems but it was at the opposite end of the pitch when substitute Bryan Herbert had chance to shoot Borough into the lead, Herbert opted to strike at the near post which went wide, had he have shot accross their keeper Bacup would have been celebrating a tremendoues win away from home on the opening day of the season.
Brent Peters Managers Comments. Our two goals did come from intricate passing resulting in two quality finishes, had we have been more consistent with our passing game that would, and should have taken us to another level especially when we were 1-2 in front, instead we for some reason did opt for the long ball and some players relaxed allowing our opponents back into the game, however prior to the game I would have taken one point from this fixture all day long, it is just frustrating to have seen us take the lead and then fail to push on, instead we allow them back into it, something we must learn from.
Team: McGregor, Anderson, Hughes, Jopson, Lucas, Shepherd (Greenwood), Brown, Borg, Carroll, Oldham, Hartley (Herbert). Subs not used: Hall, Mannion.
