Despite the fact that Bacup had not less than eleven players out for this game, the visitors produced their best performance of the season scoring their highest tally in any one game this season despite having to play fifty minutes with ten men following the Brian Herbert Sending Off for his second yellow card.
Bacup started brightly with the movement of the front lads seemingly providing problems for Nelson. Herbert was brought down and the resulting free kick was inches over the bar from John Luker, minutes later Dave Luker showed brilliant ball retention before putting on a plate a good opportunity for Herbert who wildly swung a leg and missed a simple opportunity.
Luker, Herbert and Oldham were causing Nelson all sorts of problems with their movement, and it was from this sort of movement that Herbert played in to Luker who’s penetrating run into the box only to come to an end when he was brought down for a penalty. Captain for the night Stuart Shepherd stepped up to face his former team mate Billy Carrington in the Nelson Goal and slotted the ball past home only for the Bamber Bridge Official to rule the goal out and ordered to take again for encroachment. This did not faze the Captain as he guided the ball into the corner giving Carrington no chance.
The second goal came three minutes later and what a goal, Lee Oldham made a blind side run and John Borg picked Oldham out perfectly to produce an excellent finish past the bewildered Carrington.
Nelson’s threats were minimum but they did look dangerous on corners and free kicks but Bacup defended them well in the main, however with ten minutes to go to half time Herbert received a second yellow card. Stood just inside the Nelson half with his back to the attacking goal he had a ball played up to him, instead of protecting the ball he allowed the ball to run in behind him which was between Bryan and his defender, trying to make amends for his mistake of not holding the ball he made a rash attempt to correct his mistake which resulted in a second yellow card and an early bath.
The sending off did not have any adverse effect on Bacup’s dominance and this proved to be rewarding when Lee Oldham made a good run which resulted in Nelson giving away another needless free kick, this time some thirty five yard out which Mark Fitton struck goal bound with power and precision that Carrington could only parry to the advancing John Borg who made no mistake from close range.
Bacup were three goals up before Jack Mcgregor the young Bacup keeper was brought into the action producing an excellent save putting the ball out for a corner which was defended. The visitors final goal came when Shepherd spotted another good run by Oldham, Shepherd’s vision and pass was excellent and with Lee Oldham striking the ball across Carrington with a first time shot that struck the inside of the post and go into the net for an excellent take and finish by Oldham.
Nelson managed to pull a goal back three minutes from time when John Luker who had been solid all night tried to win a ball he had no right to win, this resulted in a free kick being awarded against him at the edge of the box. The kick was struck goal bound and whilst Jack Mcgregor got a hand on the ball it was only to assist the Nelson Substitute Alex Mugan in scoring from close range. That goal was too little to late but on this performance there was only one team in the game, Bacup Borough.
Brent Peters Managers Comments” All my lads have done well tonight, they were up for the game they all worked hard for one another and produced football at times of the highest calibre with quality finishing. What did make a massive difference was the positions Davey Luker was taking up and the movement of Herbert and Oldham. In previous games we have been too predictable playing in front of defences but in this game we got in behind them. This was down to the movement and the vision my lads did show. The midfield certainly won their battles something which was evidently missing in our previous two games and at the back we were solid with the experience of Gary Lloyd who’s talking and organising was extremely vital and welcoming. My only concern now is that can we build on this performance? hopefully yes, it is vitally important that we do. We must not have an after the Lord Mayors Show, consistency from everyone is now vitally important we need to build on this win “
