In a week which did see Manager Brent Peters show the exit door to several players, this offered the opportunity for four new signings to make their debut, also back was influential Captain Ian Hughes to help earn the visitors a valuable away point.
In contrast to previous games the team looked solid throughout stamping their authority on the game right from the kick off. For twenty minutes the home side were not in the game with Bacup not allowing them out of their half, some good neat play following a Bacup throw in resulted in Cross, Luker, Mcguire and Borg linking up well, the final ball went to Shepherd who shot just over the bar. Shepherd was then involved in a move with Luker who shot direct into the keeper. Bacup were continually working well and getting into some good areas with Mcguire’s pace causing the home side defence problems and he did well linking up with Luker who's final ball went into Lee Stott who shot but it failed to trouble Fielding in the Glossop goa. The best chance of the half fell to Davey Luker at the far post unmarked but by taking a touch and not striking the ball first time Glossop were allowed to recover and a glorious chance went begging.
Despite all the early Bacup pressure with nothing to show, it was at the opposite end where Glossop almost made Bacup pay for not making their dominance count. Glossop’s Dave Morris made a late deep run from midfield which caused panic in the Bacup defence resulting in a goal line clearance, then following this let off, defender Lee Anderson conceded a free kick which was struck against the Bacup cross bar. At the opposite end of the ground and almost the last kick of the half Bacup had yet another chance to take the lead but the Glossop keeper was equal to a Stuart Shepherd shot.
Bacup started the second half very much like the first half taking the game to the home side, some excellent football was produced between Shepherd, Stott, and then Matthew Cross who drilled the ball right across the face of the goal and if Mcguire have reacted sooner it would have been a simple tap into the net,iInstead a quality ball in came to nothing. Shortly after this another chance went begging for Bacup when following a free kick the ball did land at the feet of Shepherd who struggled to get the ball out of his feet and found himself snatching at the shot which was just over the bar.
At the opposite end of the ground Glossop won a corner from which Davey Luker allowed his marker the luxury of a free header down to the far post where Matthew Cross was situated to stop a certain goal, the home side got another chance, this time keeper David Gallagher tipped the shot over his cross bar for another Glossop corner which was defended.
With the game drawing to a close the home side had a glorious opportunity to have taken all three points when Bacup's Riley was isolated against Glossop’s Darren Hamilton, the ball fell kindly to Hamilton who slipped the ball past Riley before shooting, but his shot rebounded back off the bar, with the Bacup keeper going one way the ball somehow got deflected the opposite way gifting another opportunity to Glossop but with great reaction Gallagher reacted brilliantly to the shot and made a terrific save. The game of chances did not end here, it was Bacup who had the final chance when Barker found Chadwick who made a good run into the box, the Glossop keeper was quick to react off his line and as Chadwick shot the ball went into the keeper before rebounding back against Chadwick for a goal kick.
Manager Brent Peters Comments "I told the players prior to this game with the team I was able to put out onto that pitch I would expect something from the game, this we did get and fully deserved, Glossop is not an easy place to go and get anything from and the pitch is not the best and they are always a battling work hard team. What we showed in abundance today was every one man in this team wanting to work hard for his team mates, we actually were a team, showing true battling qualities all over the pitch and at times we played some good football. In the past we have carried players, certain individuals have been moaning when the ball does not run to their liking, in contrast to today when lost causes became reality. This was made possible by work ethics and belief, yes we had a charmed life near the end and yes David Gallagher made a top class save, however there was a good platform there today to build on. We actually got one point more than we did last season at Surrey Street, we also kept a clean sheet for only the second time this season. It was a new team and a new broom sweeps clean, I actually saw a Bacup Borough side of old today with a ruthless streak that anything gained by the opposition would have had to have been worked hard to gain”
