It is true what they say that it can be a cruel game, a game which when you are battling for points and nothing drops your way, well that was the story of yet another defeat for Bacup Borough but a defeat that they can take a host of positives from in this game, a game in which Bacup had the majority of possession but failed to have that cutting edge which would most certainly have granted them something they richly deserved from the game.
In the first half Colne were attacking down the slope but mounted very few attacks with Bacup taking the game to their hosts, but it was Colne that had the first opportunity from a corner which Captain Scott Gizon headed against the Bacup Cross Bar, whilst Bacup got away with the Gizzon Header, Bacup from this had a strok of bad luck when at the opposite end of the ground a Davey Luker hooked ball fell to Chadwick whos goal bound drive was somehow blocked by his own player Danny Hartley, stopping what seemed a certain goal, on twenty two minutes Colnes Ted Cockett popped up from no where to send a twenty five yard shot goal bound which David Gallagher the young Bacup keeper flung himself accross to push the ball onto the post and out for a corner, it was from this corner that Cockett was granted a free header which he placed into the far post giving the home side the lead.
Chances were at a premium for both sides but prior to the break Colnes Mark Crossley was tested with a curling Matthew Cross free kick.
The second half got under way with Bacup kicking down the slope but soon lost the services of Craig Chadwick with a deadleg and was replaced by Bryan Herbert, the first chance of the half came Bacups way when Danny Hartley put Ian Barker in onto goal but his weak placed shot was taken at the second attempt by Crossley, With Bacup desperate to get something from this game and working hard to achieve this Manager Brent Peters made a double substitution bringing on Adam Lucas and Simon Heaton back from a long lay off, they replaced Barker and Greenwood, Colne found themselves fortunate to still have their lead intack when good play by Lee Stott to Bryan Herbert who put a quality ball across the face of the goal some ten yards out, Danny Hartley got on the end of the cross but sadly shot over the bar, a perfect goal scoring opportunity gone.
With time running out for Bacup and Colne hanging on frustration started to creep in on both sides resulting in a couple of off the ball incidents, one which saw Colnes Kieron Roberts leave the field with a suspected broken nose, Bacups last chance came when Adam Lucas did get on the end of a cross to head into the arms of Crossley.
There was nothing to seperate the two sides over the ninety minutes apart from one lapse of concentration resulting in Colne getting the only goal of the game.
Brent Peters Managers Comments " The only thing that Colne had to offer was free kicks and corners around the box, this was what they play for and to be fair are well organised in doing, the sickening part from my point of view is the work rate and at times the quality of our football we did produce was different class which deserved to get us something from the game, but if we cant get the basic part of our game right when it comes to marking on corners, then we deserve what we did get, it was not as though the lad did steal a march on my player and got above him to win the header, the lad was clearly not marked and was granted a free header so we are then punnished, and then at the opposite end of the ground when we create good opportunities we must take them or at least make their keeper save, we had two very good opportunities, Ian Barker should have done better although he did make the keeper save but Danny Hartley blasted over from close range, we just cant afford to miss chances like that, normally Danny would score them in his sleep, probably his long lay off had something to do with it, but it certainly was a bad miss, that goes in the whole concept of the game changes we would have probably gone onto win the game, one thing I do know we would not have lost the game thats for surre"
