Abbey Hey 1 Bacup Borough 0 - Sat 9th February 2008

Bacup Borough were streets ahead of their opponents in this vital bottom of the league clash, Two goals disallowed 95% possession three efforts blocked on the line and several more opportunities which amazingly were not finished, a lack of concentration and positional awareness by Danny Hartley in the tenth minute did result in Abbey Heys Ashley Brown gaining the advantage on Hartley before delivering a slick pass into space that the lively Astley Mulholland effortlessly guided the ball into the Bacup Net. There was nothing in the remainder of the game that the home side produced other than some win at all cost defending which supprisingly somehow managed them to hang onto their slender lead to jump ahead of their opponents in the division.

Bacup did have the ball in the net on the half hour mark when a Matthew Cross corner was flicked on which AUJULA INDERJEET placed into the net, despite no complaints or appeals from Abbey Hey supprisingly a late flag ruled him to be offside, another strange decision to go against Bacup was on the stroke of half time when Shepherd was fowled inside the penalty area, however whilst the official deemed it to be a fowl he failed to award a penalty but he awarded an in direct free kick citing that it was dangerous play, the kick was sent over the bar and despite Bacup's dominance they were still one goal to nil behind.
Following the break veteran striker Tony Carroll was introduced in place of Brown, Carroll was not available to start the game but his presence had an immediate impact on the game when he linked up well with Hartley who found Luker whos effort was scrambled off the goal line, Bacup then won a free kick which Carroll just shaved the post.

The visitors were forcing the homeside back in numbers from which yet another corner was won, the ball was knocked long with quality and Luker rose to head past Steve Downs in the Abbey Hey goal but yet again the officials played a part when the Referee this time ruled the goal out for what he described as climbing.

Minutes after their second disallowed goal it was looking evident that it was not going to go Bacup's way when Davey Luker found Lee Stott whos effort was somehow blocked on the goal line before being scrambled to safety, in the final minutes of the game and with the home side baying for the referees whistle Lee Stott received the ball, he created some space to get his shot off which had the keeper going the wrong way, this looked all the way the equiliser but yet again lady luck was with the home side when the keeper going the opposite way to the ball did somehow divert the shot away with his feet, gone yet again was another chance and along with the several chances were gone another three points that no way should Bacup Borough have squandered.

Brent Peters Managers Comments " This result was a disaster lets not make any mistake about that, however reflecting on the performance and how the game did unfold we were by far the better side although we did not play as fluent football as we have done in previous games we did look a very good well organised side, this was until the ball got in to our final third, several chances were created and several chances were not taken through a lack of composure and experteese in front of goal did cost us, more composure and this could have been a 6-1 rout, this really as been our problem all season, we are playing midfield players in striking positions, why? because natural finishers are hard to find and when we do have the chance to sign that particular player, the players demands are proving to much for a club like Bacup Borough, there is one thing saving the clubs position in the first division but this must not be done with a financial burden that could put the long term future of the club in jepordy, for me as the Manager it really is frustrating but I can only work with the finances I have got and the players that will come for those finances, the signing of Goal keeper Phil Melville IS a massive signing and a positive move for us and if I can get at least one, if not two quality strikers from where Phil as come from then starting next week, I really cant see us dropping many, if any more points, if we do then we all know where that will take us"
