Padiham 1 v 1 Bacup Borough aet

It was little wonder you could hear the high rate voices of the Bacup Management Team of Brent Peters & Andy Hill at the end of normal time, talk about self destruct at both ends of the pitch, well it was evident for all to see and little wonder the air was blue prior to extra time, Bacup had created enough goal scoring opportunities throughout but still found themselves going into injury time with a slender one goal lead which was scored on nineteen minutes through Chris Ogunyode to then find themselves having to play an extra thirty minutes of extra time and now a replay on Wednesday due to seconds of total madness.

From the off Bacup with their pace & power were causing the home side plenty of problems it was thanks to some excellent Goalkeeping by Sean Davis that was keeping the scores level although there was little he could do on nineteen minutes when Lee Oldham who had done well all afternoon did brilliant by taking the second ball in his stride, he worked himself between the challenges of the Padiham players before releasing Chris Ogunyode who finished well. Despite taking the lead and creating some excellent opportunities there shooting was either way off the mark or Davis was producing some fantastic saves, none more than a Davey Luker shot that was heading into the corner of the young keepers right hand post, at the opposite end Padiham were constantly getting free kicks around the penalty area mainly due to some rash and impatient defending but the Bacup rear guard were not troubled with them, this could not be said when Paul Fildes played his strike partner in who’s effort was defended almost on the Goal line.

Almost on half time the Padiham keeper did pull another very good save off again from the Bacup Borough Captain Davey Luker’s head.

The second half got underway and almost from the start Bacup missed a glorious opportunity when following good work from Davey Luker who put Lance in who in turn found Chris Ogunyode who from the position he was in should have been doing better rather than blazing his effort well over the bar.

Bacup made their first substitution with striker Hayden Paul replacing Daniel Cocks, almost from his first touch following a good ball from Lee Oldham Hayden Paul brough another save from the Padiham keeper for a corner, from the resulting corner it was Hayden Paul once again who got on the ball but this time his effort was just wide of the upright, then yet another opportunity did come Bacup Borough’s way when Chris Ogunyode played the ball in behind for Lance Ogunyode, the keeper was quick off his line but Lance was first to the ball but his attempted lob went over the keeper and bar as well.

Then following yet another Bacup attack Hayden Paul was fouled resulting in a free kick, a quality delivery from Kayde Coppin just needed an alert team mate to gamble and add a touch for a simple goal but once again another opportunity wasted.

With the clock winding down and Bacup looking certain to be progressing into the next round they won yet another free kick. Tthe visitors failed to heed the instruction of Head of Player Development Andy Hill by not taking the ball into the corner. If this was not naive enough, what followed next was. Right full back Ben Shawcross was too busy getting himself involved with their supporters rather than concentrating on what was to follow and got himself deep onto his centre backs. The Padiham player pulled off his shoulder into space and the ball was delivered across over the full backs head for the lad to play a simple ball back across the front of the Bacup defenders and Paul Fildes literally stroked the ball into the net. The whole episode of how the goal was allowed to develop and finished saw both members of the Management team were seeing red on the final whistle.

Going into extra time Bacup made their second substitution when Ben Shawcross was replaced with Robert Fox. The Padiham late equaliser seemed to give Padiham a bit more belief at the start of extra time and almost did take the lead when Bacup keeper Jon Paul let a long range effort out of his grasp but thankfully for him he managed to retrieve at the second attempt, then Bacup Borough’s Chris Ogunyode took on the Padiham defender before driving into the box but put his effort over the bar, the same player did the same run again but this time the Padiham keeper saved, then another Bacup move which should have resulted in a better ending was when Davey Luker sent a deep high ball over towards Lance Ogunyode who took his effort first time but went well over the top.

The last effort of the first period of extra time went to Padiham who had won a corner from which a Padiham player was afforded the luxery of a free header which went over.

At the start of the second period of extra time Falco Lourenco was introduced for Bacup in place of the tireless Lee Oldham, it was once again Bacup taking the game to Padiham when Chris Ogunyode released Hayden Paul who’s effort went just over the Padiham upright, then Bacup earned themselves a free kick from which once again the Padiham keeper tipped over the bar for a corner, from the corner if it was bad enough the strikers missing opportunities, Defender Adrian Bellamy found himself with a free header but the story and frustration of Bacup Borough’s afternoon was sadly once again another vital missed opportunity.

At the end of the game I managed to get a quick word with a furious Bacup Manager Brent Peters who had this to say

”I am not just talking about this particular game but some games previous, if these lads do not learn and learn very quickly to stop self destructing, then I am afraid they will always be losers and not winners, Peters added “ I could stand here and talk about the amount of missed chances we have not put away, this I will not do because first and foremost a mighty lot of credit must go to their young keeper Sean Davis who was excellent at West View in our 1-1 draw and again he was excellent in this game, however for all his excellence we beat him with a quality finish by Chris Ogunyode and well executed by Lee Oldham on nineteen minutes, from this moment on irrespective of anything else.

If we are fully concentrated at the back for the entire game we would have done enough to go through, the madness that happened in injury time was crazy to say the least, to start with it was our free kick and we are putting the ball into their box when we should have just driven into the corner in order to wind the clock down, if this was naive we then have our full back getting involved with other issues rather than getting himself back in and set, due to this not happening one ball beats him due to his position, but from this the lad plays a simple pass across our defenders from which they have then allowed Paul Fildes to get between two defenders to literally pass the ball into the net,

Peters concluded by saying “ every aspect of that goal was so cheap that for all the good defending we may have done all afternoon, that piece of madness the entire defensive unit should be hanging their heads in total shame, through another moment of self destruct in injury time, does mean that from a game we have been comfortable in and winning, we have now to go into another ninety minutes of football in which a mighty lot can happen in that time, it was not as though they had scored a wonder goal, it was nothing else but rank bad defending on our part, I only hope this piece of madness does not cost us the chance to progress in this competition”
