Portuguese Striker Moises Costa Soares was granted his International Clearance to enable him to make his debut it took him only eleven minutes to open the scoring, the ball was delivered from the left for Warren Collier who was bundled over which looked like a strong claim for a penalty, those claims turned to cheers when Moises struck the ball into the corner of the colne net, this goal came following an earlier chance for Colne who had won a free kick, momentarily the Bacup defence had switched off when the home side took a quick free kick keeper Ashley Timms had to be alert to.

The big striker for Bacup was causing the home defence all sorts of problems, Moises received the ball in space he quickly turned and sent in a powerful shot that Christopher Brennan in the Colne goal did well to deal with.

Whilst Bacup were asking all the questions it was Colne on thirty five minutes that got the ball in the net to draw level from the penalty spot, this came as a result of a defender not taking responsibility thus allowing the Colne midfield player to steal a march on the Bacup defender, this resulted in Djassi Braima Djanco making a rash challenge to which the Referee had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot which was converted.

This score line stayed like this into the break although Bacup Borough’s Warren Collier had an effort cleared off the line which would have given them a much deserved lead.

At the start of the second half Bacup had to make a forced change when Jamie Rother was injured to be replaced by Dominic Slavin, Bacup playing down the slope took the lead on fifty four minutes, keeper Ashley Timms long kick was not attacked by the colne defence thus allowing the ball to bounce from which Bacup Borough’s Steven Smith got onto the end of before placing the ball into the net.

Two minutes later it was game over, the ball was played into Moises Costa Soares who made himself big and strong before spraying the ball out to a wide position where the advancing Warren Collier ran onto the ball before producing an excellent finish to make it 3-1.

By this time Bacup were in dominant mood and did make it four when Smith was clean through onto goal but was brought down, being the last man the Referee had little option but to dismiss Samuel Hayes leaving his side down to ten men.

It was again the Portuguese striker that played an important part in the goal by holding the ball up before laying off for smith who’s quick feet proved to much for the defender who gave a way a penalty which Smith converted.

Colne managed to pull a goal back on seventy minutes, Paul Waine conceded a free kick the ball was knocked into the Bacup left channel where Matthew Tindall was given to much room by Martin Cosgrave who did allow him to go inside before shooting past Ashley Timms.

If Colne had any thoughts of a late comeback, it was only thoughts, Bacup did squander several opportunities to have scored even more goals, Steve Smith put an effort just over the bar following a long kick from Timms, Warren Collier shot just over following a good run, Dominic Slavin had an opportunity stopped on the line by the Goalkeepers feet.

Manager Brent Peters Comments “Tonight was a milestone for Bacup Borough Football Club having played one thousand games in the North West Counties League, To win as convincing has we did away from home at the game which is an historic milestone in the clubs history, a win which also puts us to the top of the league is really the icing on the cake. We scored four well executed goals and had players have played the right passes when in the right area’s then with the chances created the number four could easily have been six goals such was our dominance, this said we played in fits and starts we were by no way fluent consistently through out.

Our keeper Ashley Timms has had one save to make in the entire ninety minutes, credit for this must go to the defensive unit playing in front of him, the two goals Colne did get were more down to bad or indiscipline play on our part than good play from the opposition, Their goal from the penalty spot was the correct decision but had our centre back have taken responsibility and attacked the ball, the danger would have been cleared and no need for any rash challenges which happened, the Colne second goal came through the lad being able to have to much room.

It was a good win and a good team performance within that performance some individuals having had excellent performances but there is still plenty of improvement to come, this side is young and Athletic & skilful with plenty of room to improve, the pleasing situation being, they want to improve both individually & collectively as a team.”
