Bacup Borough 2 v 2 Winsford United

Bacup Borough got themselves into a comfortable two goal lead, both goals coming from Man of the Match Lance Ogunyode on thirty & fifty two minutes, but once again a total lack of indiscipline within the Bacup team in terms of team shape and responsibilities did cost them not only three points but the opportunity of finishing in a creditable top ten league placing.

Bacup started the game well against the Leagues Challenge cup finalist as early as the second minute a great defence opening ball from the impressive Bacup midfielder Josh Lynch another prodigy from the Pro Vision Academy found Lance Ogunyode who put in an excellent ball across the Winsford goal which was attacked by Chris Ogunyode who headed the ball against the Winsford Cross Bar, this early effort dictated the surmounting Bacup Borough pressure throughout the half with several goal scoring opportunities being created.

On the half hour Bacup took a well deserved lead their play had deserved, it came as a result of a long ball up the gully of the pitch to Barry Massey who flicked the ball on into the space behind the Winsford defence, the pace and power of Lance Ogunyode was too much for the Winsford defenders who then once the Winsford opted to come off his line he cleverly placed the ball over the goalkeeper giving his side a much deserved lead.

The score line at the break remained one goal to nil with Winsford creating nothing during the first forty five minutes.

Bacup started the second half sloppy particular Chris Ogunyode who by not ensuring he did the right thing with the ball he lost possession giving Winsford an opportunity to put the Bacup defence under pressure which they comfortably did deal with.

On fifty two minutes Bacup had got themselves a two goal cushion this goal came when Barry Massey turned well with the ball before releasing Lee Oldham with Lee Oldham’s way to goal cut off he did find Lance Ogunyode who made no mistake shooting past the helpless keeper.

It was from this two goal cushion that Bacup Borough’s discipline in terms of team shape did falter, the game was so comfortable for Bacup that players from all positions wanted to get high up the pitch in an effort to join in play and try to get onto the score sheet, this had far reaching affects on the game when one of Bacup’s attacks broke down, with Players over committed one long ball down Bacup Borough’s right put Winsford in the ascendancy with men over, for the first time in the game Bacup Borough’s Dominic Stockdale failed to go and head the ball instead allowing the ball to bounce before being dispossessed a deep long cross came in which really Horridge the Bacup keeper should comfortably have come and dealt with, this he failed to do and once young Josh Greenhalgh could not get enough onto the header to clear only heading towards the far post area where Substitute Jack MacKay had pulled off into space but gratefully accepted the flick on to finish shooting across Horridge into the opposite corner of the net.

Despite this set back with only thirteen minutes remaining if Bacup Borough had have kept their discipline in particular Chris Ogunyode the three points would and should have been in the bag, however one piece of madness from Chris Ogunyode did present Winsford with a lifeline which they gratefully accepted, it started from an off the ball incident which with no ball to contest for Ogunyode in front of the Assistant did first of all kick out at his opponent and then purposely ran in front of his opponent obstructing his run, the Assistant immediately flagged for the Referee’s attention, following a debate Winsford were awarded a free kick, this was their gifted last chance to salvage something from the game, the ball went into the area which Horridge initially saved by palming from which the Bacup defenders only partly cleared, this resulted in Experienced striker Andy Kinsey getting onto the ball, he turned created space before hitting a stunning shot which Horridge saved but could not hold only this time once again his defenders failed to win their battles in the scramble which followed resulting in Adam Bayle finding the narrowest of spots ensuring his side snatched one point from the jaws of defeat.

Following the game the Bacup Manager Fumed

“Despite the fact we did not lose the game it most certainly did feel like we did by the way we turned what should and would have been a comfortable victory into a draw. Peters added “ the way we lost our discipline both in team shape and in terms of Chris Ogunyode personal discipline was in the main the story of our season, it is hard enough winning games against the opposition in the North West Counties Premier Division something we are more than capable of and proved that, however we then defeat ourselves with our very own self destruct button due to our own indiscipline.

Peters went onto say “at two nil we were comfortable and had we have kept our shape and not had players going well beyond their stations in order to try and get onto the score sheet, then anything that Winsford had have thrown at us we would have dealt with, it should never happen that when we give the ball away in the attacking third of the pitch that one long ball can end up doing so much damage as resulting into the opposition scoring, several players need to look at themselves also once again I find myself questioning my keeper for not dealing with a cross in his six yard box, with regards to their second goal that piece of self destruct was implemented when Chris Ogunyode did himself or his team mates no favours at all by his actions, this said his team mates failed to then help out by not defending a situation to which they did have the chance to clear,

Peters finished by saying “ had we have got the three points to which we most certainly have had, this would have gone long way to cementing a creditable top ten finish, sadly should we beat Colne on Tuesday our target we will miss by one point, this through our own self destruct is most certainly disappointing to say the least”
