Bacup Borough 0 v 0 Glossop North End

Last Season’s FA VASE Cup Finalist’s Glossop North End were the visitors at the Brian Boys West View Stadium, whilst chances were at a premium for both sides the entertainment value was good with both teams working hard through out in an attempt to break the deadlock.

Bacup looked a completely revitalised side compared to their mid week disappointment at Padiham , this said Glossop almost opened the scoring in the very same manner that Padiham did in the previous game, Glossop won a corner which was headed to the edge of the Penalty area, Bacup striker Lee Ellis pushing out failed to get anything on his clearance which landed at the feet of a Glossop Mid Field player who’s effort came back off the Bacup post before being put to safety.

The home sides first chance did come following a Glossop corner which Bacup Keeper Tommy Turner collected before sending a good early kick up the field, Lee Oldham did well before find Martin Cosgrave who failed to get his strike off first time, his dwelling on the ball did allow Glossop to dispossess him forcing a corner which was defended.

Bacup had another chance and yet again this chance came from a long ball up the pitch from Tommy Allen the Bacup keeper, Lee Oldham collected the ball before striking a first time shot that was a fraction wide of the Glossop upright.

Glossop almost made something of a poor back pass from Matthew Hampson that seemed to catch his team mates unaware when he was in a good position to send the ball in the opposite direction, following this the home side were forced a change following an injury to Warren Collier, his place was taken by Jamie Rother.

The second half was very much the same as the first half with both teams working hard in an attempt to break each other down, Glossop were gifted an opportunity from their own penalty area, this came when Bacup Borough’s Martin Cosgrave had made a good fifty yard run into the Glossop area but frustratingly for the Bacup Management team, yet again no delivery came into the box from a good opportunity to do so, Cosgrave lost the ball, Glossop broke quickly the ball was crossed to the far post where a Glossop player got in his header but with no power or direction it was safely into the arms of Allen, a further opportunity did come for the visitors when the ball was given away by Sean Roscoe enabling the visitors to get in behind the Bacup defence but with several players waiting for the pull back the lad opted to try his own luck only to smash the ball into the side netting.

Both sides made substitutions in an effort to win the game, Moises Costa Soares & Steve Smith came on for Bacup replacing Matthew Hampson & Sean Roscoe but whilst both teams gave their all, that single goal eluded both sides in what was an entertaining no score draw.

Bacup Manager Brent Peters Had This To Say “Following a poor performance in mid week we had to have a good look at the team shape in order to get us back to not conceding and building from going back to basics, on this showing we achieved our objective against a good Glossop team, we must remember the majority if not all of their team went all the way to Wembley in the Vase , bad sides don’t do that, looking at the league table had they have taken three points they would have been where we are, Glossop are a good side & Bacup Borough are a good side, what do you get invariably when two good sides meet? A stalemate unless one bit of quality is produced usually from a set piece, I was pleased with our overhaul display, we looked a lot more compact, I agree that we need to work on situations going forward in order to be more creative but had we have got the one goal to win the game I would have given my side 10/10 that goal was missing so I will settle for 8 /10 considering the rubbish that was dished up in mid week, this was a vast improvement”
