Winsford United 2 v 0 Bacup Borough

Vodkat League Cup Round 3

Saturday 23rd January 2010

This was Bacup Borough’s first competitive game for six weeks and only their third game in an incredible twelve week period, it was little wonder why Manager Brent Peters was bemoaning having to come back into action for such an important game which being realistic was the final chance of any silverware this season.

Peters explained “should it be put it into perspective the amount of weeks without competitive football it is just like having a close season but then reporting back on the day your competition starts without implementing the couple of weeks to build ones fitness levels, this then followed by pre season games in order to be ready for the start, due to the adverse weather being able to hire inside training facilities in order to keep fitness levels up have been as scarce as hen’s teeth although we have sourced facilities out it has been difficult. being able to arrange friendly games in order to reach match fitness as just been out of the question, so was it little wonder that if ever a game I did not want my lads to come back to, it was this one especially bearing in mind the magnitude it would have on our season, some cynics may point out that it was the same for the majority of other teams, however I disagree.

Without taking anything away from a well deserved Winsford victory, our hosts up until the 16 th of December had been playing regular unlike ourselves “ Peters added the lack of activity certainly showed as we did not just have one player who was not at anywhere near his best, we had ten players all of which were well and truly way off the mark in positional play, passing ability, quality, work ethics & competitiveness, the only positive to come out of this game was the debut of Goalkeeper Steve Dryden, whilst Steve was not in anyway overworked, everything he did, he did well including making a good penalty save, the two goals he was beaten with, credit must go to the quality of the finishes especially Winsfords opening goal which came right on half time” Peters added “ on the way home I was stopped by the Police on the motorway and given a fixed penalty ticket for speeding, my lads should all have been given a fixed penalty for loitering such was it a bad day all around “

Winsfords opening goal came on 44minutes when winger Josh Hancock made a penetrating run before delivering a quality cross with pace which Striker Peter Murphy got a foot past his marker Braima Dejassi to guide the ball into the net.

Winsford scored their second on 62minutes when twice Braima Dejassi slipped obviously wearing the wrong footwear leaving his marker to be through onto goal who made no mistake.

Winsford were awarded a contentious penalty that the Bacup players were remonstrating with the official stating it was a blatant dive, however Debutant keeper Steve Dryden made a good save, minutes later several players from both sides did get involved in an heated situation which resulted in both sides being reduced to ten men with Bacup Borough’s Aidrian Bellamy being sent off along with the Winsford Striker.
