Glossop North End 2 v 0 Bacup Borough

Bacup Borough without the services of Tommy Turner, Rhodri Giggs & Sean Roscoe went down to the Hillmen who scored a goal at almost the conclusion of each half to secure the three points.

It was the home side that almost took the lead a quarter of the way into the game when Bacup keeper Phil Melville was slow coming off his line to clear the ball from his defender, a mix up followed which resulted in a succession of corners.

Chances in open play for both sides were few and far between, Bacup had two very good half chances the first a set piece. Steve Sheil’s took a free kick from the right side of the pitch, Warren Collier received the ball before getting in a shot which was blocked, the rebound falling to Harrop who shot inches wide.

The second chance came as a result of a long ball up the middle of the pitch which Jamie Byrne controlled well before playing a one, two with Warren Collier resulting in a stunning Jamie Byrne shot which was blocked on its way to goal.

Bacup Borough won a corner which Captain Davey Luker headed just wide.

With very little football being played from either side chances were at a premium until on forty minutes when Glossop won a throw in. Both Kyle Harrop and Jacub Wood let Dave Hedges go past them with ease and he produced what seemed like a nothing shot which Bacup defender Adam Turner passed directly back to Martin Parker who was on as a Glossop Substitute, Parker was then left with the easiest of finishes to give the home side a one goal lead.

The second half was very much the same as the first half, with little or no football played from either side resulting in both keepers being mere spectators. Martin Cosgrave made one telling run into the penalty area and was brought down but no penalty was awarded. Lee Oldham was introduced by Bacup in place of Jacub Wood and the one only clear cut opportunity came to Lee who was clean through onto goal from the right side of the penalty area, with only the goalkeeper to beat he produced no composure at all and blasted the ball high and wide. It was little wonder he had his head in his hands such was poor finish. Bacup could only manage one other effort which was a long range Kyle Harrop shot which keeper Ash Gotham took with ease. At the opposite end of the pitch it was almost the same scenario for Glossop who could not create very little in open play until the 89thminute when a long ball down the middle of the pitch was attacked by defender Adam Turner, both Turner and the centre forward came together, both players missed the ball which carried through for the lad to run onto and finish putting the game and points beyond Bacup Borough’s reach.

Bacup Borough Manager Brent Peters had this to say “ his was easily our worst team performance of the season, on the night neither Glossop nor Bacup inspired me, in fact if they call what I witnessed football, then we will all be in trouble with the descriptions act, there was no football produced from either side. Glossop scored their opener from a gifted pass from us, Lee Oldham had chance to get us on level terms, and in the position Lee got himself in he must do better by at least making their keeper work but to miss the target completely speaks for itself. Our fullbacks failed to get high up the pitch supporting, I can’t recall our central midfield running beyond our strikers, our wide players failed to get at the Glossop defence, on the one occasion Martin Cosgrave did we had strong claims for a penalty yet that was the only isolated time that we took them on.

We lacked a leader to get hold of the ball to make us play, from the standards these players have set themselves during the course of the season these lads were collectively as a team very poor indeed, Glossop are having a great season, but there again off tonight’s showing I am sure they likewise failed to turn up but when we gift teams opportunities like we did for their two goals, then do they need to turn up? All in all a poor game that lacked creativity from either side.”
