Bacup Borough 1 v 1 Colne |
||
|
The points were shared in this East Lancashire Derby but Bacups Tommy Turner should have come away with the match ball and a hat trick to his name and celebrating three points for the home side in the bargain. Bacup started well dominating the early stages of the game, their first opportunity came when Giggs was given a defence splitting ball which the Colne keeper came and seemed to take out Giggs but the official was not having it was a penalty despite the Bacup claims, then Steven Smith did well on the left before producing a quality cross in which first of all Giggs headed and then Turner but just over the bar. Despite Bacup Borough's early pressure it was Colne that took the lead, Bacup conceded a free kick at the edge of the box, the kick was partly defended but Colne soon won back possession on their left hand side of the pitch, the ball went into the path of defender Billy Priestley who shot across Tony Tomposs to give the visitors a twelve minute lead. Despite Cole taking the lead it was the home side that were the dominant force in the possession stakes, it was no surprise when in the twenty second minute Steven Smith & Rhodri Giggs combined well before Rhodri found his striking partner Tommy Turner who composed himself before producing a quality finish. At the opposite end Bacup defender Kyle Harrop almost quickly gifted Colne the lead when he cleared the ball against the advancing player which rebounded into the path of a Colne player, it really should have been a goal but the shot went wildly over from close range, very much a let off for Bacup. Bacup at the opposite end of the pitch did win a free kick which was delivered in and Tommy Turner with his back to goal attempted an overhead kick which was just over the cross bar. Almost on half time Colne won a free kick at the edge of the penalty box , the ball was shot goal bound but Tony Tompo saved well with a full length save putting the ball out for a corner which was defended. In the second half Steve Smith had a glorious opportunity to put Bacup ahead when he latched onto a defence splitting pass after he had made an intelligent run, Smith went goal bound but then opted to square for Tommy Turner when he would have had a better chance himself, Turner received the ball before going past a couple of defenders to get his shot off which was blocked on the goal line. Colne won a free kick which was delivered with quality and pace but the header went over the upright. On sixty minutes Bacup introduced Martin Cosgrave for Warren Collier & on seventy Minutes Jamie Byrne replaced Adam Turner with captain Davey Luker dropping back into defence. It was substitute Cosgrave that delivered two quality balls into the area from which the first ball was on Tommy Turners head at the far post, an header which Tommy Turner should never have missed but he did and then in the closing minutes another Martin Cosgrave ball found Tommy in front of goal, this was the kind of situation that Tommy Turner would thrive upon, Cosgrave played the ball across the face of the goal to Turner who somehow missed from close range, another day Tommy Turner would have been walking off with the pitch an hatrick and the match ball. Following the game the Manager had this to say” For long periods of both halves we had lots of possession without hurting them, although Tommy could have hurt them had he have put his chance away almost at the end of the game, I feel I must give Colne credit for their workmanlike performance, they were busy which due to this it did make situations difficult and frustrating for us, on the balance of chances in the first half for both sides I felt the half time score was about right, I did not see it the same way in the second half, we should have turned our possession into goals in addition to this the two quality balls in from Cosgrave and the one from Roscoe most certainly should have been finshed, this we failed to do leaving the game evenly balanced, had we have played the right ball at the right time when players have made intelligent runs, then I am sure we would have scored more goals, too many wrong decisions were being made and too many times killer balls were tried but failed which resulted in us loosing possession to Colne who would knock the ball long early in order to get them in on the counter attack. Pro -rato of chances we created, the amount of possession we did have, then this score line is disappointing, having said that, following our last run of results I am thankful we did get something from the game “ Team: Tony Tomposs, Sheil, Steve, Jamie Rother, Adam Turner (Jamie Byrne), Kyle Harrop, Warren Collier (Martin Cosgrave), Matthew Hampson, Davey Luker, Steve Smith, Rhodri Giggs, Tommy Turner Subs Not Used: Matthew Andrew, Jacub Wood, Bryan Herbert Goals: Tommy Turner 24
