Bacup Borough 4 v 1 Atherton Colleries

A Tommy Turner hatrick and a Jamie Rother Strike were the Icing on the cake in this comprehensive win against Atherton Collieries, with three players missing from Saturday’s FA Cup triumph and goalkeeper Jamie Thompson failing a late fitness test to make four Bacup were not deterred in any way. As soon as the third minute the home side should have been in front when Nicky Taylor struck the post the rebound fell to Tommy Turner who somehow missed from close range. Atherton almost made Bacup pay for that miss when Matthew Cross got caught but Atherton failed to capitalise on his error. On 30 minutes Bacup won a free kick, the ball was played up to Tommy Turner who controlled with his chest before striking a well taken goal, eight minutes later Bacup were two ahead when Dominic Slavin played the ball to Matthew Andrew who’s deep cross was met by the advancing Jamie Rother who shot across the advancing keeper. Two minutes later Atherton pulled a goal back when the defence got caught square, Matthew Cross conceded a penalty from which Collieries David Holt struck past Tompos. Right on the stroke of half time Bacup went further in front when Tommy Turner received the ball on the half way line before going on a solo run before finishing clinically.

At the start of the second half David Walsh for Collieries found himself in space when he received the ball but his shot went wildly over the cross bar. On 53 minutes Martin Cosgrave replaced Jamie Rother and on 70 minutes new signing Craig Corneille was introduced in place of Matthew Andrew. In 75th minute Tommy Turner completed his hatrick when he collected the ball at the edge of the box created his own space before a sublime finish. Three minutes later Tommy was replaced by Lee Ellis and several other chances were created but the score line remained Bacup Borough 4 – Atherton Colliers -1

Following the game we spoke to Manager Brent Peters who had this to say “There were several pleasing aspects for me in this game, the first was the midfield as a unit, we won our battles in there but equally our ball retention was very good which enabled us to get into some excellent scoring positions. It was pleasing also for Tommy Turner, the lad works tirelessly and creates a lot of openings for himself, whilst recently he has not got what his work and endeavour have deserved, he certainly made up for it tonight with a well taken and fully deserved hatrick. Whilst as a team we are not the complete item yet, one or two areas need fine tuning but that apart the lads are getting more accomplished with their responsibilities and growing in confidence by the game at the same time producing some quality football and in turn creating lots of opportunities hence the four goals which could easily have been more“
