Debra's Pie in Th Sky
If anyone had suggested that Bacup Borough’s game against Congleton Town on Saturday 28 th March would attract a television film crew, they might have been accused of making a statement that was nothing more than pie in the sky.
It was, however, more a case of pie on Sky last weekend, as a film crew from Sky Sports News headed for East Lancashire to feature a local delicacy that has become renowned and enjoyed by many a visitor when they make the trip up to the Brian Boys Stadium.
Bacup Borough’s Corporate Executive Debra O’Connor oversees all the catering arrangements on match days, and over the past few years her home made potato pie has become a “must have” for hungry supporters on match days. So much so, that manager Brent Peters decided that Debra’s efforts were worthy of national acclaim.
Brent explained: “Over the years of being in the game I have built up a lot of media contacts, including people at Sky Sports. When it is international week, as it was last week, Premiership Clubs are quiet on breaking news, and Sky Sports are always looking for other stories. “Peter Smith of Sky Sports News has been to our ground in the past and he got in touch to ask if I had a story for him. I told him that he should come down and do a feature on Debra and her potato pie, and as he has been here before and sampled the pie for himself, he agreed straight away.”
Peter and the Sky film crew duly arrived before the game and crowded into the kitchen to film Debra preparing her famous and well requested dish before interviewing her about life at Bacup Borough.
Brent said: “They also interviewed some supporters and did a piece with me as well, and they asked me where Debra in football terms ranks alongside the likes of Best, Law and Charlton. As far as I and everyone at Bacup is concerned, like those three players Debra is among the all time greats, when it comes to potato pie.”
or her part. Debra admitted she was a bit taken aback at the attention she received. “It was a bit of a shock when Brent told me that Sky Sports were coming down to film me working in the kitchen”, she said. “But if it helps us sell more pie on match days, that can only be good for the club.”
The filmed piece that the crew put together was run throughout the morning and again in the early evening on Sky Sports News the following day. And, unlike many who will have watched the story on television across the country, there’s good news for those of us within travelling distance of East Lancashire.
Bacup Borough still have ten home games left between now and the end of the season, so there are plenty of opportunities available over the next few weeks to sample Debra’s now nationally famous potato pie. |

Rossendale Interiors backs Borough
Bacup Borough should be able to throw the kitchen sink at teams when the new football season kicks off — after landing a sponsorship deal with kitchen and bedroom retailer , Rossendale Interiors. The showroom , which is based on Newchurch Road in Stacksteads , has become the main stand sponsors at Borough West View ground in a four-figure deal.
“This is a fantastic boost for the club,” said Brent Peters , manager of the North West Counties League Club. “Teaming up with a local business like this is vital for a club of our stature — without the support of sponsors like Rossendale Interiors it would be very tough for a club like ours to compete. “The company is widely respected in the area and I only hope that this deal will help encourage other businesses to follow suit.” Rossendale Interiors Showroom Manageress , Doreen Cunliffe said: “We are pleased to be able to support one of our local sides. ” Rossendale Interiors is one of the area’s leading Lancashire kitchen and bedroom retailers with showrooms in Stacksteads, Blackpool and Ulverston. The Rossendale showroom alone has more than 40 displays. The company is the retail arm of J and J Ormerod plc (JJOplc) which is one of the largest kitchen and bedroom manufacturers in the country. |
